Challenge
A client recently reported that our metallic thermal transfer ribbon was not delivering the expected shine and clarity on satin ribbons. The prints appeared dull, with compromised metallic effects, raising concerns about whether the ribbon was suitable for their high-end gift packaging applications.
Investigation & Testing
Our technical sales specialist immediately replicated the client’s printing setup using the same ribbon and satin material. The process included two key tests:
1. Optimal Energy Settings
Using recommended parameters:
- Speed: 2 IPS
- Deep: 7 (0–15)
The result was a fully transferred, sharp, and glossy metallic print with excellent adhesion and reflectivity.
2. Client’s Original Settings
Using the same ribbon at the client’s higher temperature setting:
- Speed: 2 IPS
- Deep: 15 (maximum)
The print showed overheating effects: faded metallic shine, slight coating detachment, and minor smudging—consistent with the client’s complaint.
Root Cause
Metallic ribbons require precise energy control. Too little heat causes incomplete transfer, while too much heat breaks down the metallic coating, leading to:
- Loss of gloss and reflectivity
- Poor adhesion or flaking
- Blurring or smudged edges
Solution
We guided the customer to adjust their printer to the mid-range deep setting (D-7), which restored print brilliance and durability. The client confirmed that the prints then met their quality standards, with vibrant metallic shine and crisp detail.
Key Takeaway
Printing temperature is the decisive factor in metallic ribbon performance. Whether you are printing on satin, polyester, or other specialty materials, always test and calibrate energy settings to achieve:
- Full transfer without gaps
- Shiny metallic color
- Clearly printing effect
